Dental care is a priority for most of us. Prisoners of war should be no exception in this regard. However, navigating VA eligibility criteria can be a challenge for anyone, so read on to find out if you qualify for all needed dental care if you were a POW.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) defines a former prisoner of war (FPOW) as a veteran who was held by an enemy government or hostile force during active duty in wartime.
POWs have the same rights as any other veteran, including access to medical services. VA records indicate that more than 15,000 FPOWs are currently receiving compensation for health conditions related to their service.
Does this compensation include dental care?
Like all veterans, FPOWs who suffer a service-related injury, illness, or condition are entitled to VA compensatory benefits. This compensation includes hospitalization, nursing home, outpatient treatment, and dental care.
Even if you do not suffer from any service-related condition but meet the criteria to be considered a POW, you are eligible for outpatient treatment, medications, eyeglasses, hearing aids, prosthetics, and all necessary dental care.
How do I apply for compensation if I am an FPOW?
The process to apply for benefits as an FPOW is similar to the one you must follow to apply for VA benefits. First, you must gather all the documentation that proves your condition, including your periods of service.
Next, you must fill out VA Form 21-526 and submit it to the VA either online or by taking it in person to your regional VA office.
Although we often forget, dental care is an important part of our health. If you are an FPOW, don't miss the opportunity to receive all the care you need.
